Chapter Three: The Curse of Knowledge

How many times have you heard or said, “knowledge is power”?

Knowledge is powerful. But what happens when knowledge-holders cannot successfully make the shift to become knowledge-sharers?

Is knowledge a source of power when it is tied to its holder?

Is knowledge power when it cannot be shared in a way that others understand?

The answers to these questions are, of course, no.

Why? Because knowledge itself is not where the power lies.

The power for any knowledge-holder depends on two critical processes: the effective communication of knowledge and the use of that knowledge in meaningful transformation.

“The great enemy of communication is the illusion of it.”

—William H. Whyte, Sociologist, Organizational Analyst and Journalist

In this chapter we examine the Quiet Captains of Morse Code and the prominent mind knot that ties these leaders to their own minds—the Curse of Knowledge.

What do I mean by Quiet Captains?

These are leaders who prefer to think rather than talk. I am also talking about intellectual leaders who are experts in their field, steeped in knowledge and vision.

And in their state of “quiet,” they think deeply. In fact, they typically become experts in whatever mind journey they pursue.

Now here’s the tricky part: though they are often experts, Quiet Captains can struggle with the effective communication of their knowledge. And when they do choose to share their genius, it often requires a fair amount of decoding to be understood by others - making them the Quiet Captains of Morse Code.

However, no longer Quiet Captains suffering from the curse of knowledge, they can be Inconspicuous Influencers with the practical lessons, model and framework outlined in this book.

Have I tested my communication with someone who is not familiar with the topic to see if they can grasp it easily?

Do I incorporate visual elements into my communication to help simplify complex information?
