What are Cognitive and Emotional Biases?

Brain Knots and Anchor.jpg

We all have cognitive biases.

The key is to understand what they are, how they show up, and how to manage them to work for instead of against us.

What are cognitive biases?

You can think of cognitive biases as knots in our minds that constrain the serious work of thinking in favor of quickly tying a perceived situation to a simple response.

Cognitive biases are “mind knots.”

These biases—or mind knots— are hidden in our subconscious. They are preconceptions that wreak havoc on our judgment and decision-making. Because of their subconscious nature, we are typically unaware of our mind knots … until they get us into trouble.

And they usually do.

Cognitive and emotional biases can produce significant negative effects in leadership and business.

Cognitive biases cannot be removed, nor can they be easily untangled.

That’s why I call them "mind knots."

They tangle your thinking, judgment, and decision-making.

Mind knots prevent rational leadership by causing flawed judgment, poor decisions, bad behaviors, and negative consequences for leaders and

business outcomes.

Understanding mind knots informs how someone processes information, situations, experiences, and challenges.

Mind knots affect the decisions we make and the actions we take.
